Kat Shannon: "Kept Time"
Artist Volumes, Issue 3, 2026
Kat Shannon is an artist and educator currently based between São Paulo, Brazil, and Orlando, Florida, who works across photography, text, and video. Shannon is driven by a desire to continually examine the complex role photography plays in our lives, culture, and collective memory. Her work uses the image as a tool to explore intimacy, connection, and community. The artist’s lyrical photographs and texts probe the porous boundaries between truth and fiction, seeking to linger in their uneasy reciprocity.
Kept Time encapsulates slices of Shannon’s life after moving from NYC to São Paulo, while also adjusting to becoming a new mom with her partner Ana. The images quietly challenge how definitions of family and motherhood are described and felt, refusing to rest in any one particular category or resolution. As we flip through the accordion fold we breathe in residues of transitory moments with the artist and her family, which are disrupted by a smaller book inside the book with an experimental text. The text plays with the notion of a footnote, bringing our attention to thoughts and ideas that might be considered a sideline of the story—rendering them instead the narrative itself in order to raise what’s typically seen in the margins to the center. The book embraces multiple readings, inviting the viewer to flip forward and back, mirroring how life cannot be contained in any one specific linear direction or experience.
Lesly Deschler Canossi writes: “The book's cut pages give the viewer a single continuous act interrupted mid-performance, surfacing and resurfacing, the way any repeated task loses its discrete edges over months and years. You are never looking at one moment. You are looking at a moment already shadowed by the one before it, competence quietly accumulating where wonder used to be. Shannon's photographs don't resolve that tension. They just keep it visible, one cut page at a time, for as long as the book allows her to keep looking. That residue is fatigue, but not the fatigue of struggle.”
